Midge returns the kiss, her own worries aroused now. She certainly loves his masculinity and decisiveness, but she wouldn’t want that to become a burden for him. If he defers to her, it won’t make her think less of him. In this situation, she just wanted to let him pick whatever he thought might feel best for him, as a thank you for making her feel so good. Midge figures she’ll have a good time regardless. He always makes sure of that.

Robert lays her down on the car’s backseat and Midge looks up at him, concern in her blue eyes. Reaching up, one hand tangles in his hair and the other strokes his chest. Midge tugs on his shirt so that he’ll lean down again. She gives him the most reassuring kiss that she can muster, gently sucking at his lips before pulling back.

“I just want to make you feel good, darling,” she whispers. “You always make me feel like I’m the only woman in the world.”
