Midge sighs again. “She’ll need time to accept it. Actually, you should probably tell her that you don’t want to marry me. I’m not sure if that would make it better or worse.”
She looks up at him. “What they think doesn’t matter to me. You make me the happiest I’ve been in a long time.”
It occurs to Jaskier that Midge still doesn't understand exactly what his problem with marriage is, but this is not the time to discuss it. He doubts they'll get there anyway.
"She'll think you're wasting your time with a man with no future who is keeping you away from 'better' suitors."
Jaskier takes her hand to his mouth to kiss it, and rubs it affectionately with his thumb. She always says that her parents' opinion doesn't matter, and her doing stand-up does prove that, but she also keeps them so close and loves them so much. He can't help but wonder if this will implode sooner or later.
"I love you," he says as he leans over to kiss her forehead. "You have me for as long as you want me."
Midge brushes her thumb against his cheek when he lifts her hand to his mouth. “No time spent with you is wasted.”
She sighs, leaning against him. “I’ve already been married and given my parents the grandchildren they wanted. I don’t need an appropriate husband anymore. Or any husband! I should be able to be with who I love.”
"How poetic of you," he replies with a soft smile. "Thank you."
As soon as she leans in, he wraps his arm around her. "Calling me inappropriate, are you?" Just a little tease, since he wants to help the mood. Jaskier loves being inappropriate. "You are, darling. Fuck their opinions. You can do whatever the hell you want with your life - it's yours. Yours and only yours."
That makes her smile. “I think you know that you’re very inappropriate,” Midge responds. “I meant what they would deem to be appropriate for me. As far as I’m concerned, I’ve fulfilled my obligations as a good Jewish daughter. Anyone else that I choose to be with doesn’t need to fit such strict requirements.”
She crawls into his arms, tucking her head under his chin. “I love you, my handsome bard. You’re perfect for me.”
"I'm proudly inappropriate. And I know what you meant; I had to tease. I hate seeing you like this."
Jaskier thinks nobody should've ever fit such strict requirements in the first place, not even Joel, but let's not go down that road.
As soon as she crawls, Jaskier makes sure to fully sit her on his lap and hug her tightly, dropping another kiss on top of her head. "I love you too, dear. You brighten my days."
"Never apologize for fighting for what you believe in." After another kiss on her head, he starts stroking her back while singing. After a pause to consider his options, he finally sings a little something:
"♫ I believe in a thing called love Just listen to the rhythm of my heart There's a chance we could make it now We'll be rocking 'til the sun goes down I believe in a thing called love ♫"
She smiles as she loses herself in the sound of his voice, singing just for her. The words are sweet and she closes her eyes with her head on his chest.
At some point, she drifts off to sleep, then jolts awake when she realizes that he isn’t singing anymore. “Oh! Sorry…” Midge yawns. “It’s been a long day, hasn’t it?”
Jaskier could tease her about insulting his performance, but honestly, he doesn't blame her. It's been a day, indeed. He kisses the top of her head once again when he finishes the song, and that seems to wake her up. Oops.
"A long, emotional day. Definitely enough to exhaust anyone." Yet another kiss for her cheek. "Go to bed, dear. I'll join you in a second."
He closes all the blinds and turns off the lights plus the radio before getting in bed with Midge, chuckling when he sees that she's still wearing his shirt.
"You know I'll need that tomorrow, right?" he teases as he brings her closer for cuddling.

Midge idly strokes his chest hair. “Sorry to bring the mood of the evening down, but at least the call is over. Will you sing to me?”
His voice is so soothing to her.
