She grins. “Do you know how happy it makes me to hear you say that?” Midge asks. Her heart feels like it’s going to fly out of her chest with how strong her feelings are for him. “I did. Thank you, my darling bard.”
Midge kisses him again, feeling as light as a feather. “You really make me feel so… free to do what makes me happy.”
"Oh, does it?" His surprise is clearly fake, just to tease. "I had no idea. I'll have to do better." He repeats love you while dropping kisses all over her face — a move that he keeps repeating, but he can't help it; he likes kissing her and the way she giggles.
Her next statement makes him smile softly and he rests his forehead on top of hers. "Good. That's exactly what I want - for you to do what makes you happy. Don't ever let anyone stand in the way of that, dear. Not even me."
She tries to resist, but ends up squealing and giggling as usual when he kisses her face. Midge hasn’t been this happy since she and Joel first started their relationship.
“I won’t,” she replies, “but I need you. You’re one of the only people who supports my comedy career, who thinks I can actually make something of myself. Your support means the world to me.”
Hearing those words just breaks him. Jaskier remembers what it was like (it was one of the many reasons why he left home) and he's just dying to protect her from it. He wishes he could run to every person who put her talent down and yell in their faces - especially her parents.
His hug tightens and he kisses the top of her head as he rubs her back, almost as if he was pretending to be her shield. "You'll always have my support. I don't know what the future holds for us in our intimacy, but no matter what happens, I'll always be there to push you on the stage and make you shine. Promise me you'll never give up, Midge."
“I won’t,” she promises. Midge hopes they’ll always be together, even if he doesn’t want to marry her. Such longevity seems to scare him though, so she won’t mention it. She feels so protected and supported by him. It’s hard to imagine not having that. It was why the past week had been particularly difficult for her.
Midge pulls back to look into his cornflower blue eyes. “I need you in my life, Jaskier. I love you.”
One day, he'll stop being a fun novelty for the housewife. One day, she'll want an actual husband instead of putting up with his independence, Jaskier knows. And when that day comes, he just hopes they can still be friends so he can keep protecting her.
For now, he'll continue to be the kind of man that lives in the present and just enjoy what they have.
"I love you, too. You have me, Midge. As long as you want me, you have me. Your parents and your ex won't scare me away."
Midge presses her lips to his, grateful and happy to have him. She snorts a quiet laugh at that. “Good. They may try, but I won’t let them either.”
Taking his hand, she laces their fingers together. “I remember when we first met and you hit on me almost immediately.” Midge grins. “I never thought then that we would be here right now.”
"Almost immediately? I must've been slowed down by the circunstances. Cops are good at killing the mood." But not enough to ever stop him, it seems. "What are you going to tell your relatives at the wedding when they ask how you met me?"
